I spoke with WRIC-TV 8 this afternoon on the math problem in a Hanover Elementary School that used the name “Jihad” as part of the problem.

I wrote about this in this post and was also quoted in Monday’s Richmond Times Dispatch in this link. So the story is making the rounds to say the least.

A math problem causes an uproar at a Hanover County Elementary school. The controversy all began over a name used in the problem, “Jihad.”

The problem asks kids to create a bar graph using the numbers of leaves collected by different students. Tom White, a Hanover resident and creator of the website “Virginia Right” says he wrote about the topic after a number of parents approached him with concerns. Hanover County Schools says the question was created by a teacher who had a student named Jihad at the time. Officials say every other name in the problem were also students, created to help engage the students in the learning process.

“It is a valid name, it’s not very common but it generally has come to mean a holy war against Christians,” said White.
